This diamond comes from a prestigious gold snuffbox with enamel decoration and set with diamonds, made in Geneva around 1830.
This precious snuffbox was presented to Adrien-Louis Cochelet in Alexandria on May 29, 1841, by Mehemet-Ali, Viceroy of Egypt and a major figure in the political history of the Middle East in the 19th century.
Adrien-Louis Jules Cochelet (1788-1858) had a distinguished diplomatic and administrative career. Auditeur at the Conseil d'État, sent on various missions in Europe, consul and then consul general, he was posted to Alexandria from 1837 to 1841, before being recalled to France and called to high office under the July Monarchy and the Second Empire.
The snuffbox, adorned with Mehemet-Ali's diamond cipher, remained in the family descendants before reappearing on the market at Christie's in 2014, accompanied by its original presentation letter.
The diamond offered today comes from this snuffbox, preserving the physical memory of an exceptional diplomatic gift exchanged between two eminent personalities of their time.
It has been set in this modern brooch in the spirit of the late 19th century.
Beyond its own qualities, this stone is distinguished by a remarkable historical and aristocratic provenance, associating the pomp of the court of Mehemet-Ali with high French diplomacy under the July Monarchy.
