After Pierre Julien (1731-1804) Amalthée et la chèvre de Jupiter Bronze proof with brown patina, Barbedienne foundry, signed F. Barbedienne and stamped COLLAS mechanical reduction. 68 x 45 x 29 cm. Note: The collaboration between Ferdinand Barbedienne and Achille Collas is fundamental to the history of 19th-century art reproduction. Ferdinand Barbedienne, a French industrialist, joined forces in 1838 with Achille Collas, an engineer and inventor, to found the Société A. Collas & Barbedienne. Achille Collas was the inventor of a mechanical process for reducing sculpture in the round (patented in 1837), improving the sculptor's pantograph. Barbedienne's aim was to make art accessible to a wider public by offering affordable, faithful reproductions of masterpieces, including ancient sculptures and contemporary works. Thanks to the Collas process, Maison Barbedienne was able to produce and market a large number of reduced copies of sculptures (Venus de Milo, Molière, Racine, etc.) in bronze and other materials. Their work earned them numerous distinctions, including a silver medal at the 1839 Exposition Nationale for a reduction of the Venus de Milo. After Achille Collas's death in 1859, the company continued to prosper under the name "F. Barbedienne", becoming the leading manufacturer of bronze copies. Barbedienne", becoming one of the most renowned art foundries in Paris. The "cachet de réduction mécanique A. Collas" is often affixed to Barbedienne bronzes, as in the case of our sculpture, the original marble model of which, sculpted by Pierre Julien in the 18th c., is preserved in the Louvre.
