LES FRENCHIES - Original concert poster, 1974
LES FRENCHIES.
Original concert poster, 1974.
Original rolled poster, exceptional condition despite slight wear.
Dimensions: 116 x 158 cm.
This iconic poster represents a rare and precious moment in French rock history. A veritable phenomenon on the rock scene in 1974, Les Frenchies shook up the codes of the time, becoming the French incarnation of a movement inspired by the New York Dolls and decadent American rock. With their leader Martin Dune - stage name of Jean-Marie Poiré, already a famous screenwriter - Les Frenchies represented a founding act of rebellious, avant-garde French rock, anticipating the explosion of punk.
The Frenchies never recorded an official album during their first formation, which makes any item from this period incredibly rare and coveted by collectors. On release, the poster was produced in very limited editions for distribution at their concert venues, mainly in Paris. Their impact, relayed by enthusiastic articles in Rock & Folk, Le Nouvel Observateur and Best, drew attention to a rock "made in France", imbued with raw energy and a novel aesthetic, still marked by New York influence and Hollywood myths.
A highlight that reinforces the value of this line-up is the opening act that the Frenchies performed at the Olympia on November 1, 1975, alongside the Flaming Groovies, featuring a young Chrissie Hynde, later to become the celebrated lead singer of the Pretenders. This memorable concert illustrates the connection between two generations of rock and underlines the importance of the Frenchies on the French music scene.
A vestige of a short-lived but powerful phenomenon, this poster is a unique testimony to a time when French rock was awakening from its torpor, ready to embrace the cries of a generation hungry for freedom and electric thrills.
