Teheran rug, Persia - Lot 94
Teheran rug, Persia
3rd third of the 20th century.
Wool velvet on cotton backing.
An ivory field reveals a vision of the Garden of Eden, where a magnificent multicolored vase of flowers sits amid blossoming shrubs. This rich undergrowth provides shelter for a multitude of birds spying on hunting scenes. Two symmetrical fortresses support two sky boxes featuring two devils... the gateway to hell? While another caisson overhangs the other two, revealing a pair of doves... the gateway to paradise? An imposing polychrome symbolic floral composition suspended from the vault serves as a refuge for two leopards confronting the "Dragon". The sky vault of the mihrab features corollas on twisting stems and small Moorish ruby floral caissons.
Three old gold and navy counter-borders with garlands of florets frame the main sky, decorated with polychrome foliage and hiding white birds.
Two-tone chess pawn braid.
Strong symbolism, very fine quality and great presence.
Dimensions : 295 x 200 cm
