Rare and important KOUBA / AKSTAFA (Caucasus) rug, late 19th - Lot 99
Rare and important KOUBA / AKSTAFA (Caucasus) rug, late 19th century Wool velvet on wool foundation. Three magnificent poly-lobed floral medallions in brick, old gold and mauve, adorned with multicolored geometric motifs, lie on a navy field interspersed with long celadon-green boxes of stylized vegetation. Curious variegated "double-birds" (hoopoes?) dot the carpet. Four triangular brick spandrels with ivory scrolls frame the whole. Two internal highlights, composed of small polychrome pyramids topped with "crocheted ossicles", run the length of the field. Brick border with a series of multicolored geometric star-shaped flowers, flanked by two jagged sky counter-borders. Very fresh, pictorial rarity and totally atypical decoration. An exceptional Caucasian rug in terms of size and pattern, a great collector's item. (Very good condition). Dimensions : 421 x 186 cm.
