Jean Pierre LELOIR (1931-2010), Jimi Hendrix, Tirage argentique
Jean Pierre LELOIR (1931-2010) Jimi Hendrix Olympia, Paris, October 18, 1966 Silver print, dry stamp of the Archives Leloir. 40 x 50 cm. In 1966, Johnny Hallyday met a young American guitarist in a London club who had just formed a trio, and invited him to open for him on four dates in France. This guitarist, unknown to the public and not yet 24 years old, is Jimi Hendrix. The highlight of this mini-tour is the concert of October 18, at the Olympia, as part of the Musicorama of Europe 1. Jean-Pierre Leloir loved these Musicorama concerts, and he knew that he would see many musicians there: "he was harvesting his own artists," says his daughter, Marion Leloir. And from the rehearsals, it is a shock: "He fell in love with Hendrix that day". The photographer would later testify: "I can't express it any other way: [Jimi Hendrix] is one of those guys that I received in the face, like John Coltrane or Miles Davis. A musical shock that literally made me take off." While he had come for Johnny Halliday, he took 32 photos of the guitarist that day. Fascinated, Jean-Pierre Leloir will not miss a single Parisian passage of Jimi Hendrix. Just one year later, on October 9, 1967, the guitarist returns to the Olympia, as a headliner. And it will be then 15 rolls of photographic film that Jean-Pierre Leloir will unwind, on stage and backstage. On October 12, he accompanies Jimi Hendrix to the shooting of the television show Dim Dam Dom variétés, where he takes a photo that will become the French cover of the album Are You Experienced. For Yazid Manou, "the most beautiful French photos of Jimi Hendrix are those of Jean-Pierre Leloir. The one of October 18, 1966 shows the birth of a legend: the revelation of Jimi Hendrix to the public.
