André de Dienes - Lot 111
André de Dienes Nude with balloon, 1960 Silver print. Hand printed and stamped by the artist. Unique vintage print. Certificate by the curator of André de Dienes. Excellent condition. 28x35cm André de Dienes is a Hungarian-American photographer best known for his famous portraits of the young model Norma Jean before she became Marilyn Monroe. The couple collaborated for nearly ten years, creating some of the photographer's most famous work and the actress' most memorable images. Born Andor György Ikafalvi-Dienes on December 18, 1913 in Turia, Transylvania (now Romania), he worked in the publishing industry after moving to Paris in 1933 to study art. He emigrated to the United States in 1938 and worked for Esquire, Vogue, Life and other publications while documenting the landscapes of the American West. His work on celebrity portraits allowed him to finance his experiments in photomontage and fine art. Dienes continued to photograph nudes after moving to Hollywood, California, where he died on April 11, 1985 at the age of 71.
