Jean Pierre LELOIR (1931-2010), Jimi Hendrix, Tirage argentique
Jean Pierre LELOIR (1931-2010) Jimi Hendrix Olympia, Paris, 18 octobre 1966 Tirage argentique, tampon sec des Archives Leloir. 40 x 50 cm. Jimi Hendrix Olympia, Paris, October 18th 1966 Analog print, Archives Leloir dry stamp. 40 x 50 cm. In a club in London in 1966 Johnny Hallyday met a young American guitarist who had just formed a trio, and invited him to play the warm-up set for four concerts in France. This unknown guitarist, who wasn't yet 24, was Jimi Hendrix. This mini-tour's finale was the concert at the Olympia on October 18th, organised within the scope of radio station Europe 1's European Musicorama. Jean-Pierre Leloir was particular to the Musicorama concerts and he knew that he would see lots of musicians at them: "he harvested his artists there" reports Marion Leloir, the photographer's daughter. And from the rehearsals it was a shock: "With Jimi Hendrix that day it was love at first sight". The photographer admitted this later: "I can't express it otherwise, Jimi Hendrix is one of those people who completely hit me in the face, like John Coltrane or Miles Davis. A musical shock that literally made me leave the ground.". Although he had come for Johnny Hallyday he took 32 photographs of the guitarist that day. Fascinated, Jean-Pierre Leloir didn't miss a single one of Jimi Hendrix's Parisian performances. Almost a year later, on October 9th 1967 the guitarist was back at the Olympia as the headliner. This time, Jean-Pierre Leloir unwound 15 rolls of film, on and back- stage. On October 12th he accompanied Jimi Hendrix to the recording of TV show Dim Dom Dam Variétés where he took the picture that became the French cover for the album Are You Experienced. For Yazid Manou, "the most beautiful French photos of Jimi Hendrix are by Jean-Pierre Leloir". The one from October 18th 1966 shows the birth of a legend: Jimi Hendrix's revelation to the public.
