CHINA - Mid-15th century, ZHENGTONG/TIANSHUN PERIOD (1436-14 - Lot 159
CHINA - Mid-15th century, ZHENGTONG/TIANSHUN PERIOD (1436-1464) Porcelain "guan" shaped jar decorated in blue underglaze on the body with four poetic scenes depicting four immortals on a terrace, each accompanied by a servant, one offering an incense box, one climbing on a stool to pick a cherry branch and burning incense, one offering a tray with water in which the full moon is reflected, one watering a plant. Each scene is surrounded by a rock pierced with banana trees and peonies. The lower part is shaped like banana leaves. The shoulder is adorned with four branches including two peonies, the neck decorated with a frieze of foliage (cracked and chipped neck). H. 36 cm Reference: Similar jar in the Shanghai Museum, donated by Mr. and Mrs. Jenmou H.C. Hu, and exhibited in the exhibition Lustre Revealed: Jingdezhen Porcelain Wares in Mid Fifteenth Century, Shanghai, May 28, 2019 to September 1, 2019 This jar comes from a set of mid-fifteenth-century porcelains called "windswept" in English, depicting figures in landscapes and gardens with floating clouds and trees in the wind, generally inspired by traditional literature and popular drama. The panoramic landscape is comparable to a scroll painting from the early Ming period. To join the two ends of the scene, stylized clouds or rocks are inserted to provide an element of continuity.
